ABC National Obedience Trial

The first ABC Specialty Show was held in Ravenna, OH in 1943 when Best of Breed was won by Patrice de Sharvogue. There were no champions in the Specials Class provided for them though there was a champion entered in the American Bred Class. Jeffery de Klemanor was wrongfully entered and was disqualified. Patrice won the next two specialty shows and set a mark for the number of wins in that even which was equaled but never surpassed during intervening years until CH Jordean All Kiddin’ Aside won Best of Breed four out of five years beginning in 1991.

In 1979 ABC’s 3rd Vice President, Wayne Fessenden, recommended that an Obedience Trial be held in conjunction with the National Field and Specialty Show. The first ABC National Obedience Trial became a reality in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1981 and was won by the first Brittany Obedience Champion, Ch. OTCH Truner’s Crossroad Samantha. This was a significant event since the ABC for the first time was sponsoring all three types of competition at the Nationals required to win the elusive AKC triple championship.

Many fine Brittanys have won the National Obedience Trial. Ch. Prince Valiant’s Spring A’rival, UDT won the National Specialty Show in 1987 and the National Obedience Trial in 1988. Lafayette King Trooper (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986) & Jayhawker’s Lucky Jack (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014) have won the National Obedience Trial four times.
