The W.E. Stevenson Sr. Memorial Award
Trophy
1963 – today
The ABC has celebrated “dual dogging it” at the Nationals from the very beginning. At the first combined show and field trial in 1943, a prize was offered for the best-looking dual-purpose dog. An advertisement credited Aotrou MacEochaidh as the early standout, placing 1st in All-Age and 1st in the Novice show class, even before he later earned his titles.
In 1944, the ABC formalized the concept by offering an engraved bronze plaque for the new Dual Award, supported by a point system requiring dogs to earn recognition in both show and field. While no official winner was recorded that year, the framework established the award’s purpose: honoring the Brittany that best represents the breed’s complete standard—form and function.
The W.E. Stevenson Sr. Memorial Award name was added to the Dual Award in 1963, when a rotating trophy was first introduced in his honor. The first engraved name on that perpetual trophy was for Towsey’s Bub, the 1963 Dual Award winner. The trophy was donated by James B. Bell in memory of W.E. Stevenson Sr., recognizing his dedication to the breed and his success in both field and show competitions.
Notable early recipients included:
| Year | Dog | Show Result | Field Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1947 | Allamuchy Valley Addie | 1st Limited Class | 1st Open All-Age |
| 1949 | Allamuchy Valley Uno | Reserve Winners | 2nd Open All-Age |
| 1956 | Holley Haven Duchess | Best of Opposite Sex | Placed Amateur stake |
| 1957 | Towsey | 1st Novice Class | 1st Open All-Age |
As the Nationals grew, the Dual Award point system was updated multiple times to reflect new stakes and events, including major revisions in 1958 and 1963, and the addition of the Gun Dog Championship to the point system in 1995.
The ABC may designate Dual Dog of the Annual Show and Trial to any dog that has amassed the most points for his or her performance in the National Specialty Show and Field Trials. In case of a tie, preference will be given to the Open All Age Championship, then the Amateur All Age Championship then to the Open Gun Dog Championship.
The points upon which the dog is to be chosen shall be based on the following scales for field trials and show performance and the points obtained in each shall be totaled. Dogs must receive points from both the show and field. Only the higher show points received will be considered but all field points received shall be allowed in the final tabulation.
| Field Trial Placements | Points | |||
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | |
| Open All Age Championship | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 |
| Amateur All Age Championship | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 |

| Any class placement with 3 entries | 1/2 | 1/4 | ||

No points are awarded for participation in Parade of Champions, Stud Dog or Brood Bitch, or any other non-regular classes with multiple dog entries.
The single highest point value earned in the show will be the one used in calculating the award.
The Dual Award scoring system has been revised over time to keep pace with the growth of the Nationals and changes in competition formats. Across all versions, the consistent principle has been that a dog must demonstrate excellence in both the show ring and the field.
