About Tommy Thomas

Thomas “Tommy” Nealan Thomas Jr.

(1986–2022)

Tommy was a beloved member of the Brittany and field trial community, known for his sportsmanship, kindness, and passion for the breed. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, and raised in Glen Ellyn and Somonauk, Tommy’s early life was filled with energy and purpose. A proud Eagle Scout and high school wrestler, he carried that same dedication into his lifelong love of dogs—especially Brittanys.

Tommy’s journey in the sport began in 1994 when he and his mother joined the LaSalle Brittany Club. Over the years, he owned and trained 18 Brittanys, achieving numerous AKC titles, including multiple Dual Champions and the first-ever Dual Grand Champion of any breed, TNT’s Raise’N A Ruckus.

Known affectionately as “Lunch Box” for his big heart and even bigger appetite after a day in the field, Tommy was respected across the country for his generosity, humor, and willingness to help others. He handled and scouted dogs in field trials across more than 20 states, working with top trainers and earning national placements for himself and others.

Tommy embodied the spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship that define the field trial community. His legacy lives on through the dogs he trained, the friendships he built, and the Tommy Thomas Amateur Handlers of the Year Awards—established to honor the same passion, dedication, and integrity he brought to the sport.
