Brittany DNA Collection - Marvin D. Nelson, Jr. Memorial Fund
August 9, 2007

So much is happening at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Watch for an update in the next National Brittany Club publication on the status of the Marvin D. Nelson, Jr. Memorial Fund. This Fund and the work being done has drawn national attention. Dr. Gordon Theilen was recently interviewed on the subject, and Purina will be publishing the article. When we know that it is out and where it can be accessed, we'll let you know.

In the Genetics Lab, Mark Neff and his team are moving ahead and expanding hip dysplasia and trait research. Of course, more DNA from Brittanys is needed. This includes all dogs and puppies. Dr. Neff is especially in need of dogs that are severely dysplastic. You can request DNA kits at the web site:

We have had very successful DNA collections this summer at Specialties. Remember, field trials are coming up, with different dogs available. Contact me for assistance in setting up a collection. Any gathering is an opportunity not to be missed.

The Memorial Fund made the Brittany DNA bank possible, but continued financial support is needed to further the genetic research. Donations of $500 or more will be acknowledged with a personalized nameplate on the Marvin D. Nelson, Jr. Memorial plaque, which is on display at the Center for Companion Animal Health at UC Davis. A special thank you to individuals and clubs who have participated in the past. We urge you all to consider continued financial support. Every dollar counts. Pass the hat at meetings. Our goal is $100,000 by the end of 2007. The fund currently is endowed and in excess of $40,000.

Contributions at this time will also be DOUBLED by a generous donor. For more information about making a gift, please contact Lisa Woodare-Mink at 530-752-7024 or lwoodardmink@ucdavis.edu.

Please spread the word!
