ABC NATIONAL DUAL AWARD
We’ve been doing it at the Nationals from the very first, “dual dogging it” that is. The first combined show and trial in 1943 offered a Handcrafted Baked Bean Service for the Best Looking (Dual purpose) dog in trial. An ad claimed Aotrou MacEochaidh was the winner. He was 1st in the All-Age and first in the Novice class at the show, having not yet won either of the titles that he subsequently acquired.

In 1944 the ABC offered an engraved bronze placque for the Dual Award. No winner is recorded. The Brittany magazine gives a list of the top contenders for the award according to the point schedule:

SHOW: BOB 4 points, BOS 3, Winners 3, Reserve Winners 2, First in regular class 1, Champions entered 2.

      FIELD: All Age 1st 5 points, 2nd 4, 3rd 3, 4th 2; Open Derby 1st 3 points, 2nd 2, 3rd 1; Open Puppy 1st 2 points, 2nd 1.

A total of 6 points required with points from both show and field necessary.

In 1947 Allamuchy Valley Addie clearly won the award with 1st in the Limited Class and 1st in the Open All-Age. In 1949 Allamuchy Valley Uno was 2nd in the Open All-Age and Reserve Winners at the show to be the next recipient. In 1956, Holley Haven Duchess won Best of Opposite Sex in the show and placed in the Amateur stake for a total of 6 points. Towsey then won the award in 1957 with his 1st in the Open All-Age and 1st in the Novice class.

The point system was updated in 1958 to include points for the National Championship, National Amateur, and Futurity. The adult field winners were scaled at 5, 4, 3, and 2 while the Futurity started with 4 points. The show awards ranged from 5 for Best of Breed to 1 for first in a class. Dogs were required to win in both show and field. Only the highest placement in the show was to be counted but all field placements allowed in the final tabulation. The following were winners: 1958 and 1959 Dingo’s Little Mike, 1960 Penny’s Happy Pepi, 1961 Dingo’s Little Mike again.

A further update of the system was required when the Show Futurity was inaugurated in 1963. Only adult wins in the field carried points, with show points being updated so that any class winner who defeated at least one dog received points. The show change was required because of the [increased] size of the classes. [The Gun Dog Championship was added to the point system in 1995.]

Dual Award Point System
The ABC may designate Dual Dog of the Annual Show and Trial to any dog that has amassed the most points for his or her performance in the National Specialty Show and Field Trials. In case of a tie, preference will be given to the Open All Age Championship, then the Amateur All Age Championship then to the Open Gun Dog Championship.
The points upon which the dog is to be chosen shall be based on the following scales for field trials and show performance and the points obtained in each shall be totaled. Dogs must receive points from both the show and field. Only the higher show points received will be considered but all field points received shall be allowed in the final tabulation.
